Love is good, some say love is blind.  It is also rational to be wise. It is apt to inform the youths to know the following about their health status before committing themselves to a life- long relationship in marriage.

The first thing to know is the genotype. Genotype can be simply defined as the genetic constitution of an individual organism.

The problem to avoid with genotype compatibility for intending couples is the sickle cell disease (a receive disorder)—a very serious medical condition with high prevalence rates in African south of the Sahara.


 

Types of Genotype:

The genotypes in humans are AA,AS, AC,SS. They refer to the haemoglobin gene constituents on the red blood cells. AC is rare, whereas AS and AC are abnormal.

Genotype compatibility chart

Study this table below carefully:

AA+AA= AA, AA, AA, AA (Excellent)

AA+AS = AA, AS, AA, AS, (Good)

AA+SS = AS, AS, AS, AS (Fair)

AA+AC = AA, AA, AA, AC. (Good)

AS + AS= AA, AS, AS, SS (Very bad)

AS+SS = AS, SS, SS, SS (Very bad)

AS+AC= AA, AC, AS, SS. ( Bad; advice needed)

SS+SS = SS, SS, SS, SS (Very bad)

AC+SS = AS, AS, SS, SS (Very bad)

AC+ SS = AS, AS, SS, SS (Very bad)

 

Compatible genotypes for marriage are:

AA marries an AA. That’s the best compatible. That way you save your future children the worry about genotype compatibility.

AA marries an AS. You will end up with kids with AA and AS which is good. But sometimes if you are not lucky all the kids will be AS which limits their choice of partner.

AS and AS should not marry, there is every chance of having a child with SS. AS and SS shouldn’t think of marrying.

And definitely, SS and SS must not marry since there’s absolutely no chance of escaping having a child with the sickle cell disease.

The only thing that can change the genotype is the bone marrow transplant (BMT). However it is very expensive and carries some risks.

Other things to check out for are HIV Status and Hepatitis.

As simple as they are, we need to take it seriously so as to prevent upcoming crisis in marriages.

PHARMACIST'S OATH: MY REFLECTIONS.

How time flies, the good news is that you are the pilot. I wrote this three years ago on my Facebook page and decided to post it on my blog. "I picked out my Pharmacist's oath to ponder on its contents, just like the 10 commandments, there was 10 "I shall" in the oath." The second 'I shall' is very delicate and demanding and it quotes: "I shall apply the full measure of my knowledge,  skills and abilities to improving the health and well being of all those I serve and place their needs above my personal interest and considerations" You may understand better if you do night calls,  after  and vigorous day duty and your body calls  for rest, when the patient comes knocking your sleep should give way for immediate attention to the patient. Today,3rd November, 2017 will be one year since I took the oath before many witnesses  and I thank God for the journey so far... MY DECISIONS

Sometime last year, I paid a visit to an elderly man whose son came to the pharmacy to get him some medications. I could understand what this man would be passing through, so I decided to go see him. When I arrived at the place he directed me to, I gave him a call in order to confirm the house. When I got in, I saw the man sitting; saliva was drooling from his mouth, he also urinated there and the son went ahead to clean it up. I asked to see his medications and the bag of drugs was brought. I found out he had not been taking his medications and had also resorted to herbal drinks which were bought at exorbitant prices by the woman he lived with. You will get to understand later.🙂 Among those of his children present, none was medically inclined. The good thing was that the daughter was an undergraduate student of Food and Nutrition, so we flowed together in the dietary management of her dad; of which he was doing excellently well.
